Tips for Searching the Catalog

Using Traditional Search

Our Traditional Search allows you to quickly search for an item at the MSM Library. We own roughly 130,000 items, not including individual recordings and articles that are accessible through our digital subscriptions. Many of our older resources, such as pre-2000 institutional recordings and DMA theses, are only discoverable using this search method.

What Traditional Search Does and Does Not Do

What you can see: What you cannot see:
  • All items, physical and electronic, owned by the MSM Library, regardless of item status
  • The status and location of each item
  • Open-access (i.e. public domain) e-resources
  • Individual content that is available through our digital subscriptions (e.g. Naxos recordings, journal articles)
What you can do: What you cannot do:
  • Place holds on non-reference materials
  • Basic keyword searching
  • Place holds on reference materials
  • Place holds on e-resources
  • Faceted browsing
