The Library's ebook collections offer access to thousands of titles. There are many different ways of reading them, and the digital rights attached to them can vary, title by title. It can sometimes be a little confusing.
If you have questions about finding or accessing any particular title or collection, email us or come talk to us in the Library.
The most comprehensive way to find the ebooks available through the Library is to search our catalog. Use the Advanced Search feature to limit your search to ebooks. You can also browse by provider (see below).
Generally, ebooks from Bloomburg, Brill, Cambridge, De Gruyter, JSTOR, Oxford, Project Muse, Taylor and Francis, and Wiley are DRM-free.
DRM-free ebooks have no restrictions on the number of concurrent users or how many PDF pages you can download. In most cases, you can download the entire book, chapter-by-chapter or all at once, for you to keep.
For ebooks from most providers, when you find them in our catalog:
EBSCO books are the most plentiful in the Library and also the most varied in terms of restrictions. There are three main ways to read EBSCO ebooks:
Note: As of June 2025, EBSCO has paused ebook reading through their app, while they complete updates. Until a new version of the app is released, we recommend reading EBSCO ebooks through their newly updated in-browser reader (as stated below)
Libby (by Overdrive) was added in August 2025. Familiar to many from your local public library, it has an easy-to-use app for phones and tablets. Books can also be read directly in a browser.
Libby is also a source for audiobooks and several dozen magazines, including popular ones like New York and The New Yorker. You can find Libby books in our catalog, but you can also find Manhattan School of Music within the Libby app (choose "Add Library" and search for Manhattan School of Music or our zip code, 10027).
After logging in with your MSM SSO credentials, you'll see all of the ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines available to you through Manhattan School of Music.
Note: Links from our catalog will direct you to the Overdrive (the Libby app's maker) site for the book. From there you can borrow it, and read it in your browser. One borrowed, you can also open and read the book in the Libby app on your phone/tablet.
